Himalayan rock salt was discovered in this region (now Pakistan) through the army of Alexender the Great, however formal mining started in by Janjua people in 1200s. Rock salt mining in Pakistan is being carried out mainly from Khewra, Warcha and Kalabagh region. It is best rock salt with Sodium Chloride ranging between 96% to 99% and containing other essential trace minerals, all at acceptable safe level of less than 1%, including Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium etc. Salt appearance varies from white to pink or reddish colours.
